Workshop Description:
Doing is a great mystery. We are perhaps the only living organism whose doing has seemingly become unanchored from a relatively limited series of patterns of behavior. Compared to us, plants seem very limited. They can seldom even change positions. Animals do change position but within a relatively limited range of patterns and places. But human beings have managed to spring free from gravity to travel out into space, to burrow deeply into the earth or sink to the bottom of the sea, to dance and work day or night, and to wonder about their purpose and presence.
Human doing seems closely related to human thinking, yet we know so little about our thoughts. Where do they come from and why? How did they first arrive? How can they sometimes be so mistaken? Why are we sometimes at a total loss for knowing what to think or what to do? Why are some people brilliant thinkers who effortlessly make great strides and others tumble around within a limited sphere?
And why do we sometimes have crazy thoughts that seem unrelated to our usual nature? Or do things that seem to make absolutely no sense? Why do we sometimes make the same mistakes over and over? Why do some people never seem to learn? Why do we daydream when we should be doing something serious?
What we have not recognized until now is that there are in fact four different ways of doing; each way of doing is anchored in a particular way of knowing.
There is a doing that comes out of sensing.
There is a doing that comes out of feeling.
There is a doing that comes out of the imagination.
And there is a doing that comes out of thinking.
In this workshop we will venture into the deep imagination and call forth an animal for each of our ways of doing. We wish to find its origin. Where does it come from. We want to discover the ways in which these four ways of doing interact with one another. Do they interfere with one another or do they support each other. Is there a way to help harmonize them so that whatever we do we do it without internal opposition. Is it possible for us to be at home without doing?
